Purple House Cancer Support Centre in Bray Co. Wicklow have opened a new state of the art Cancer Rehabilitation Gym which will serve as a dedicated facility for Cancer patients in their physical recovery from treatment and surgery.
The service will be run by a team of physiotherapists with qualifications in Cancer Rehabilitation. Patients will have the opportunity to avail of one to one sessions, as well as group exercise classes at Purple House.
The gym was made possible thanks to a huge fundraising effort which was lead by 18 year old Cancer survivor Dylan Lynch. подать кредит онлайн во все банки
Dylan’s mum Cathy says:
‘In 2013 Dylan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and he relapsed in 2017. Dylan spent most of 2017 as an inpatient in Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Dylan had a rare adverse reaction to his treatment which caused issues with his central nervous system and necessitated a five week stay in the intensive care unit. As a result of this Dylan needed to learn how to walk again. When Dylan left Crumlin, he was in a wheelchair and had to regularly attend Physiotherapy appointments in both Crumlin and the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire. One of the biggest obstacles for us was the availability of local gyms for Dylan to use. Due to his age and being very self-conscious it was virtually impossible for Dylan to attend. A gym in Purple House will provide Dylan with a safe environment to continue with his rehabilitation. He is with a team he is familiar with and the people who supported him throughout his treatment.’
Conor O’Leary, General Manager of Purple House says:
‘It has been one of our long standing goals at Purple House to have a dedicated, Community based facility for Cancer patients to receive physical rehabilitation after treatment and surgery. We are delighted that our new Centre in Bray has evidence based and proven facilities for Cancer patients and their families in a supportive environment. We want to say a special thanks to the many donors who fundraised so hard for the gym and the employment of specialist Cancer physiotherapists. We could not have achieved this without them. Future fundraising efforts will contribute to the ongoing costs of the gym. The Purple House gym compliments our existing Cancer support facilities and we look forward to continuing our development of Community based Cancer Support Services.’
Dr Grainne Sheill, a chartered physiotherapist from St James Hospital and Trinity College Dublin will be working with patients at Purple House says:
“There are currently no outpatient exercise oncology services available to patients in any of the eight national cancer centres. The Purple House Rehab Gym addresses this, and will provide exercise rehabilitation programmes to patients receiving cancer treatment. Patients will be screened for cancer related physical impairments and prescribed an individualised, progressive exercise programme. This service is a large step towards the development of survivorship services involving physical rehabilitation in Ireland”
The gym is the latest addition to the new Purple House Cancer Support Centre in Bray, which also features counselling & therapy rooms, a children’s sensory pod and therapy room, Cancer survivorship class rooms, a coffee dock, a drop in facility and a therapy garden.
