Be Sun Smart this Summer!

We will have a presence at various events this Summer to ensure you have fun in the sun! We will have suncream giveaways thanks to the Boots Soltan range, SmartSun UK UV wristbands, and information on our Cancer Support Services. Read more for our sun safety tips below.

Our aim is to ensure you have fun in the sun and with 1 in 3 people affected by Cancer in Ireland, it is vital that you take some simple steps to reduce your Cancer risk.

Melanoma (skin cancer) is one of the most common cancers both in Ireland and worldwide. It is increasing faster than any other cancer and it is rising rapidly in Ireland.

Steps to take to be Sun Smart:

Step 1: Wear suncream.  Use SPF 30 or higher.  Apply suncream at least 20 minutes before going outside and then reapply every two hours.

Step 2: Get some shade. The more time you spend in the shade, the more protection you will get from UV rays.

Step 3: Cover up.  Wear suitable clothing when out in the sun.  Wear a hat and wear clothes that give you as much cover as possible.

Step 4: Wear sunglasses.  It is important to protect your eyes from UV rays.  Make sure your sunglasses give UV protection.  The wrap around syle are the best.  Remember, toy sunglasses do not give UV protection, make sure your children are protected too.

Step 5: Pick up a SmartSun UV wristband from us (Available from our Cancer Support Centre in Bray Co. Wicklow).  The wristband will change colour depending on how long you spend out in the sun and will give you an indicator of when to apply more suncream.

Chat to us with us on Facebook & Twitter if you need more information.

Our Cancer Support Centre is open daily at Aubrey Court, Parnell Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow.  Phone 01-2866966 or email
