Lauren Kelly from Spin1038 Encourages young people to be Cancer Aware this Summer

Lauren Kelly, presenter of SpinTalk on Spin1038 has been announced as an Ambassador of Purple House Cancer Support and this Summer she is using her role to remind young people of the importance of being Cancer Aware.

Young people spend so much time outdoors during the Summer at music festivals and having fun with their friends, that it is important to remind everyone to be Cancer Aware and to take easy steps to reduce your Cancer Risk.

Ireland has the highest rate of skin Cancer in Europe and Purple House Cancer Support is here to support anyone affected by Cancer.

Purple House is also using their social media channels to reach other and offer their support services to more people.  You can connect to Purple House on Facebook: @PurpleHouseCancerSupport & on Twitter @purplehouseirl

Their aim is to ensure you have fun in the sun and with 1 in 3 people affected by Cancer in Ireland, it is vital that everyone takes some simple steps to reduce your Cancer risk.

Melanoma (skin cancer) is one of the most common cancers both in Ireland and worldwide. It is increasing faster than any other cancer and it is rising rapidly in Ireland.

Lauren Kelly says ‘In my day job on SpinTalk, I talk to young people from all over Ireland on a daily basis and hear their concerns and worries.  That’s why I’m delighted to support Purple House and support their goal to reach out to more young people to ensure that everyone takes steps to reduce their Cancer risk while they are young.  Every family has been affected by Cancer, including my own and we all have a duty to spread the message’

Steps to take to be Sun Smart:

Step 1: Wear sun cream.  Use SPF 15 or higher and at least SPF 30 for children.  Apply sun cream at least 20 minutes before going outside and then reapply every two hours.

Step 2: Get some shade. The more time you spend in the shade, the more protection you will get from UV rays.

Step 3: Cover up.  Wear suitable clothing when out in the sun.  Wear a hat and wear clothes that give you as much cover as possible.

Step 4: Wear sunglasses.  It is important to protect your eyes from UV rays.  Make sure your sunglasses give UV protection.  The wrap around style are the best.  Remember, toy sunglasses do not give UV protection, make sure your children are protected too.

Step 5: Pick up a SmartSun UV wristband from us (Available from Purple House Cancer Support Centre in Bray Co. Wicklow).  The wristband will change colour depending on how long you spend out in the sun and will give you an indicator of when to apply more sun cream.

Steps to take to reduce your overall Cancer Risk:

Step 1: Do not smoke. Do not use any form of tobacco.

Step 2: Make your home smoke free. Support smoke-free policies in your workplace.

Step 3: Take action to be a healthy body weight.

Step 4: Be physically active in everyday life. Limit the time you spend sitting.

Step 5: Have a healthy diet: Eat plenty of whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits. Limit high-calorie foods (foods high in sugar or fat) and avoid sugary drinks.  Avoid processed meat; limit red meat and foods high in salt.

Step 6: If you drink alcohol of any type, limit your intake. Not drinking alcohol is better for cancer prevention.

Step 7: Avoid too much sun, especially for children. Use sun protection. Do not use sunbeds.
