Purple House Cancer Support has joined the Conscious Cup campaign by asking members of the public to buy a reusable Purple House Coffee cup in participating coffee shops.

The 2018 Sumo Run Ireland – Ireland’s most unique 5 k fun run in inflatable sumo suits on a 5km route in Marlay Park Dublin, Ireland in aid of Purple House Cancer Support. The event takes place on Sunday 22nd April at 12 noon.

I spent my 60th birthday in hospital.  I had experienced problems with my leg but an x-ray seemed to confirm that it was just wear and tear.  Then a fall at work led to further investigation and eventually a diagnosis of bone cancer.

This week is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week and our Board of Trustee Member & Oncology Nurse Lizzy Kilkenny shares some useful information and answers the common questions below.

What is Cervical Screening?
Cervical Screening tests women for changes in the cells of the cervix. Its aim is to detect early cell changes, this is the really important point as cervical cancer takes 7-12 years to develop in most cases.
It’s important to note that it is not a test for Cancer. It’s a test to check for abnormalities in the cells of the cervix which may lead to Cancer.

Three years before I came to Purple House, I was diagnosed with Squamous cell carcinoma at the base of the tongue and in the right side of my neck.

At that time, I was also diagnosed with a separate cancer in kidney. They decided to deal with the major cancer first and that kicked the hell out of me. They fitted me with a peg before I started the treatment because they knew I was going to be tube fed. I ended up in hospital half way through and after I finished, I was in hospital for three months. Three months after I came out, I then had to go back in to a different hospital to get the kidney done. So I didn’t get a chance to recover and after that recovery took three years. It was three years that I was in and out of hospitals; mentally I was a basket case. I asked myself “Why am I here? What’s this? Three years and I’m still not recovered.
